Program Description

Body

In the early 1990s, before coffee shops were popular, before Starbucks settled in Pittsburgh, the Beehive Coffeehouse & Dessertery opened on East Carson Street and helped transform Pittsburgh’s South Side. It wasn’t long before the Beehive became a favorite hangout for artists, writers, students, and local folks. In his book Gen X Pittsburgh: The Beehive and the ‘90s Scene, author David Rullo not only explores the Coffeehouse as a gathering spot for creatives of all sorts, but he also delves into the ‘90s cultural scene that emerged around it.

David Rullo is Senior Staff Writer for Pittsburgh Jewish Chronicle and author of the book “Tired Scenes from a City Window,” a collection of his poetry.
